Standard Sewing Machine Company Serial Numbers

The NeedleBar Guide to

The company that IMPORTED this machine was the Standard Sewing Equipment Co, NY. The company that SOLD the machine called it a 'Universal'. This may have been a branch of Standard Sewing Equipment, or another retailer. The MANUFACTURER of the machine is Koyo, from Osaka, Japan. I found this info from Google: STANDARD SEWING EQUIPMENT CORP. The serial number on each machine will not be much help to you as there are no records to find the machine’s place in Domestic history. There is an old treadle machine produced by the company and it dates from 1863 to 1870.

  1. The Standard Company was apparently acquired by the Osaan company around 1929 and is believed to have later been bought out by the Singer Manufacturing Co. One of the machines which are quite popular among collectors is the Standard Sewhandy portable sewing machine, which was manufactured from the late 1920s through early 1930s.
  2. Antique Singer Sewing Machines by Serial Number 1871 -1950 The first Singer sewing machine was manufactured in 1851, but some of the logbooks from that time period were lost. Because of this, there are no available serial numbers for the years from 1851 to 1870.

National Factory c. 1890

The names on the following machines are examples of the models offered. National probably produced more badged names than any other company. In particular, identification is sometimes difficult because many different machines across the range were sold under the Eldredge name (after Barnabas Eldredge, founder of National). The following pages attempt to identify the various features of the differently styled models produced by National.
