Diablo 3 is still going strong. With its upcoming Necromancer release, players are still flocking to the game left and right in anticipation. If you're looking for ways to experiment in Diablo 3 beyond finishing the story mode and checking out Adventure mode, there's a bushel of cheats and unlockables you can play with to keep things fresh, including a whole new unlockable area.

Here are some of our favorite cheats and unlockables for Diablo 3 on PC you can try before the new Necromancer character releases.

Diablo 3 Cheats and Unlockables on PC: Easy XP, items, gold

If you need some extra experience or money here and there, don't fret — there's a much easier way to get it. For additional XP, gold and items, you can start by playing the 'Legacy of Cain: Explore Cellar' quest in Act I, then head to the Old Ruins and go northeast from there. You'll find a mob one cellar down, where you'll have to kill off Captain Daltyn and a score of minions, according to CheatCC.

Once you've taken out Captain Daltyn, you'll get at least one magic item and some coins; there's also a health potion hiding in a cauldron nearby. Sometimes a loot chest will appear, too. You can repeat this by exiting and re-entering as many times as you like. Captain Daltyn will keep appearing and you can keep slaying him for the rewards.

Diablo 3 PC Cheats and Unlockables: Get more potions and items

If you go to an area that offers life potions or chests, take them and then immediately save and quit Diablo 3. By returning to your saved game, you'll likely find that the area where you previously picked up said potion or opened said chest will give you another item or potion. Sometimes the chest won't spawn again, but if you don't see one, just quit and reload your save. You'll get items, gold, potions and more, according to Cheatbook.de.

Diablo 3 PC Cheats and Unlockables: How to unlock Whimsyshire

There's a secret level of Diablo 3 called Whimsyshire that's tucked away behind a wall of special ingredients you need to collect. It's a pastel world with cupcakes, adorable monsters and other cute additions that'll make you question if you've suddenly left Diablo 3 for another game. It's pretty simple to get to, but you've got to be persistent. Here's how you can reach it, according to CheatCC.

You need these special ingredients before setting off on your quest: the Black Mushroom, Leoric's Shinbone, Wirt's Cowbell, Liquid Rainbow and Gibbering Gemstone — and a Plan for Staff of Herding to put it all together.

Black Mushroom: You'll need to seek out the Cathedral in Act I's Level 1 to find on of these. You'll find it on the ground, but it's not always going to spawn. If you don't find it spawning here and can't pick one up, you can go to a later quest in Act I and head to the Cathedral Gardens waypoint. Then, take Leoric's Passage to the Cathedral and look there.

Leoric's Shinbone: This is a rare drop you'll sometimes find in Leoric's Manor in Act I later on. It won't always appear in each game, but if you see the burnt logs in the fireplace, you can click on them to spawn the shinbone 100% of the time. According to CheatCC, the easiest way to get this is by heading to Quest 9's 'The Imprisoned Angel' and using a waypoint to get to Leoric's Manor from there.

Wirt's Cowbell: You can buy this item from Squirt the Peddler in the Caldeum Bazaar in Act II. It will cost you 100,000 gold.

Liquid Rainbow: Find this in the Mysterious Cave in the Mysterious Chest in Act II's Oasis area. To get it, you have to save the old man first. The rainbow will be found in a chest after the old man opens it for you.

Gibbering Gemstone: You can find this as a random drop from Chiltara in Caverns of Frost's Level 2 area in Act III. You'll get it in the Ballistae fight area, attached to a random mob.

Plan for Staff of Herding: This will be a random drop by Izual in Act IV. You can play on any difficulty to get it.

Once you have all these items, you need to craft them with your Plan to create the Staff of Herding. To do this, right-click on your new pattern to teach it to your blacksmith. You can use the Staff of Herding as many times as you'd like.

Take the Staff to the Cow King's Ghost, which can be found on Old Tristram Road by the glowing red pit in Act I. You will chat with the Cow King's Ghost and the red hole will become rainbow-colored. You can click it to enter Whimsyshire. You'll get a Feat of Strength, Banner and Sigil as well. Enjoy the whimsy from here!

More Diablo 3 news and rumors

Mic has all the latest Diablo news, including updates on when we might be able to expect the Necromancer's appearance, Diablo 3's recent anniversary patch and more.

The concept of cosmetic items and appearances for video game characters is not a new one, but wings in Diablo 3 hold a special place in my heart. Some are creepy (looking at you, Diablo 2 anniversary wings), some are beautiful, and some straddle both lines — kind of like, you know, the whole game. Want to become your very own Lord of the Wings? Then read on through our wings list to make it happen. Fasten your seatbelts; it’s going to be a bumpy flight*.

*These wings are cosmetic, they don’t make your D3 character fly. I’m sad too.

Special event wings

In celebration of the D2 anniversary, Blizzard is gifting all D3 players a set of Prime Evil Wings. They’re pretty easy to obtain — log in on your character and voila! Wings. That said, they are extremely creepy, looking more like wiggly tentacles on the character’s back instead of actual wings. Think similar to the Anguish’s Grasp wings in the picture below.

Blizzard’s description is pretty amusing, to boot:

Log in to Diablo III any time after June 29 to unlock your own tendinous Prime Evil Wings and represent the legacy you forged on Arreat Summit. Baal—as we saw in him in Diablo II—did not have wings, but try to imagine what they would’ve looked like if he did, and if you could’ve fastened them to your hero’s shoulders.

Seasonal Journey wings

Wings from the D3 Season Journeys are probably the most familiar to the broad player base. After all, we see them pop up perhaps once a year, right?

Four sets of wings exist in D3 as seasonal rewards. These are complicated as, if you do not yet have them, you are banking on them coming up again in another rotation of seasons. For example, Season 20’s Anguish’s Grasp set (modeled after the Maiden of Anguish, Andariel) was initially rewarded in Season 8. At roughly four seasons a year, you will need to wait another three years before they return.

The other three pairs are estimated to return in future seasons. The Fiacla-Géar wings first appeared after completing Chapter 4 in Season 12. The Wings of Lempo (styled after a Monarch butterfly) arrived as the Season 16 reward for completing Chapter 4. Last, and most recently added, brave souls who finished the full Season 17 Seasonal Journey received the Galactic Wings. These were also the first wings rewarded for completing a season’s journey.

While you await the next chance to obtain one of the above, why not try your hand at the wings available year-round?

Wings from purchases, time, or luck

There are ten sets of wings that you can obtain at any time in D3. They fall into three categories: Achievements, Drops, and Purchase rewards.

Drops are, by far, the smallest category with only two options. The first pair, Cosmic Wings, are highly sought after by collectors of cosmetic appearances. They are a drop from Princess Lillian, a low spawn-rate unique unicorn in Whimsydale (not to be confused with Whimsyshire). Even if she doesn’t spawn, you can look forward to slews of gems, death breaths, forgotten souls, and a whole bunch of gold for your efforts.

The other pair, Falcon’s Wings, are just as rare, but they do not require you to go hunting an elusive mob in an equally elusive hidden level opened by an even more elusive type of goblin. These drop from a Mysterious Chest found in Act 4’s Gardens of Hope Level 1. This chest also has a meager chance of appearing (less than 1%) and has several possible spawn points in the zone.

Completing in-game achievements is your next option to obtain three pairs of wings: Trag’Oul’s Wings, Wings of Mastery, and Wings of the Dedicated. The Wings of the Dedicated and Wings of Mastery are a reward for completing all 24 of the Reaper of Souls Basic and Master (respectively) Set Dungeon achievements. Similarly, Trag’Oul’s Wings came with the Necromancer pack; players earn them for completing all Necromancer class achievements. There’s still a time investment for these three, but you’re not stuck relying on RNG to be on your side.

Finally, and most straightforward of all, are the six sets of wings included as purchase rewards. For example, the Wings of the Crypt Guardian come with the Necromancer character pack. Purchasing Overwatch‘s Origins Edition or Collectors Edition grants Mercy’s Gaze, a pair of mechanical and blade-feathered wings for those D3 players wishing to channel their inner Mercy. Similarly, the Starcraft 2: Heart of the Storm Digital Edition (and now SC2 Deluxe bundle) granted the Blade Wings (also known as Wings of the Swarm) for those fans of the Queen of Blades.

The other three have some specifics attached. The Echoes of the Mask wings are exclusive to the Nintendo Switch version of D3. Higher on the difficulty scale to obtain are the Crimson Angelic Wings, another platform-exclusive pair. However, these are exclusive to the original PlayStation 3 release, and forum posts point to them only carrying into the PS4 version via game import. Finally, and most difficult, are the Wings of Justice — obtained from the D3 Collector’s Edition. Not necessarily “retired,” but VERY expensive to get at this point as you’re banking on finding a sealed version of the original box on eBay.

Retired wings

Luckily, only a few wings fall under this category, and they’re almost universally due to timing. Players were required to participate in specific events or purchased specific Blizzard games. The most recent example of these is Lilith’s Embrace (based on the Mother of Sanctuary), received by all BlizzCon 2019 Virtual Ticket holders. Others no longer obtainable include:

Diablo 3 Angel Wings Codex

  • Wings of the Ghost Queen — based on the Ghost Kerrigan skin in Heroes of the Storm, these were a reward from that game’s event “Malthael’s Bargain” in 2017.
  • Wings of the Betrayer — your very own Illidan wings in D3, these came with the purchase of the World of Warcraft: Legion Deluxe or Collector’s Edition.
  • Wings of Valor — gifted as pre-order bonus for any version of Reaper of Souls, earning these wings required the expansion license needed to be applied by the end of March in 2014.

These unobtainable wings are proof that it helps to be on the ball with Blizzard news. Keep an eye on pre-order rewards for various titles. For example, I would love to see something death-related added as a reward for pre-ordering Shadowlands. In the interim, you’ll find me hunting rainbow goblins to get back into Whimsydale. I’ve got a unicorn to kill.
